Chapter Nine

Emily had never planned to marry or start a family. Even as part of an educated elite encouraged to do just that, she felt it would be unethical to bring another human into a world where resources would be strained for generations.

She’d had several lovers, but guarded her deep submissive needs like a dark secret, fearing that in a world of political schemers eager to grab power in a new system, such an Achilles’ heel could be exploited.

Emily had been surprised to learn that children were separated by genders on Tausea, with both trained as warriors. Once they reached young adulthood, males were allowed through a passage called The Gates to pursue and capture the female of their choosing. Irina had spoken almost wistfully of Jaquar’s firmness, of how she’d fought him until he’d proven he could dominate her to his satisfaction.

Zak also knew of the custom, and explained that on Tausea, a woman’s kneeling to her mate was the ultimate show of respect, because it proved that she honored his strength in winning the prize of female submission.

“It’s much the same with us, you know,” he said. “I aim not to force your obedience in all things, but to earn it.”

Those words had caused a flush of heat to rise through her body, and her nipples had hardened.
